Kieran Tosolini (ON 2001) Gelato Genius

Kieran Tosolini (ON 2001) pictured on right with Alessandro Del Piero, has combined his passion for food and his business acumen, to open the world’s first RivaReno gelateria outside Italy on Crown Street in Surry Hills.

Kieran’s interest in food began early, and long before cooking became trendy.  While other children were out playing, Kieran could be found in front of the television watching any cooking show he could find and writing down recipes. Kieran would spend entire school holidays turning his interest into a passion by making his own fresh home-made pasta, bread, risotto and soufflés.

A University of Sydney internship brought Kieran to Ernst & Young where he would stay four years, beginning as a graduate before departing as a Senior Consultant. After Ernst & Young, Kieran worked for a wealthy family business that owns and operates many different types of businesses around the world.

“That experience was a real eye opener. I acquired a good working knowledge of how businesses operate and the fundamental analytical skills required to run and analyse business performance,” Kieran said.

The experience meant Kieran acquired a sharp business eye through which he would soon see his own opportunity.

“I was routinely sent to Italy to assist an ailing business the group had taken over. During a previous trip I was exposed to the most amazing gelato I have ever tasted.  I really wanted to bring this authentic, high-quality Italian gelato to Sydney, where it didn’t exist in its pure, unadulterated form. When I saw how consistent the amazing quality was between RivaReno stores, I saw the opportunity to bring the concept to Sydney,” Kieran said.

RivaReno is a legendary name in gelato circles but Kieran’s Sydney store is the first outside of Italy. 

“Each flavour is intense. When you try a flavour you can actually taste the ingredients, which is the whole idea behind true Italian gelato. So, you will find many creative exciting flavours at RivaReno, but you always know what you are eating because they are well balanced and we use very high quality ingredients,” Kieran said.

At Newington, Kieran enjoyed the challenge of excelling in Languages and Economics and praised his passionate teachers.

Mark Keam (ON 1984) Delegate Virginia General Assembly USA

Mark Keam (ON 1984) and brother Dr Jin Kim (ON 1981) have lived in Korea, Vietnam, Australia and now the United States. Both Mark and Jin have distinguished themselves in their chosen fields. 

Mark L. Keam (known as Mark Kim at Newington) represents the 35th District in the Virginia House of Delegates, which is considered to be the oldest continuous legislative body in the modern world, with roots dating back to Jamestown in 1619. In November 2009, Mark was elected to an open seat, thereby becoming the first Asian-born immigrant to serve in the Virginia General Assembly. In 2011 and 2013, voters chose to return Mark to Richmond for additional two-year terms. As a legislator with a strong reputation for bipartisanship and effectiveness, Mark focuses on creating jobs, improving schools, addressing traffic gridlocks, reducing burdens on businesses, strengthening social safety nets, and making the government more transparent, efficient, and accountable.

Dr Jin Kim ia a world renowned Dentist specialising in implant dentistry and we have him on our records as living in Fullerton, California (in Los Angeles).

Tribute to a Tireless Newington Supporter

Diane Jordan, wife of Bob Jordan (ON 1956) passed away on 29 October 2014. Diane was a Newington mother who work tirelessly to support the College and its community through the Parents’ and Friends’ Association.

Diane and Bob sent their son David Jordan (ON 1983) to Newington, where he was an outstanding scholar, musician and debater. Diane joined the P&F Women’s Auxiliary, remaining a member till 1985, and served as President of the Auxiliary for three years in a row, from 1979 to 1981. During this period, she organised numerous events, including afternoon teas held after 1st XV matches and Melbourne Cup Day luncheons. She worked closely with her good friend Venus May organising rosters and the day to day work of the Tuck Shop.

Later Diane was a keen member of the Mothers of Old Newingtonians [‘MOONs’], attending luncheons and working with other MOONs and then-current parents on the historical quilted banner that now hangs in the Reception area of the Founders Building. Overall Diane’s involvement in the Newington community lasted from 1966 to mid-2014.

Diane saw three grandsons come to Newington: Sean Fitzpatrick (ON 2010) and his brother, Declan (ON 2014) are the sons of Diane and Bob’s daughter Tracey; while David’s son Thomas Jordan is in Year 9 this year.

Newington Medalists 2014 Announced

Congratulations to the 2014 the Newington Medalists Dr Rod Thomas (ON 1960)  and Professor Graham Colditz  (ON 1972) – International on their prestigious awards announced at the December Annual Prize Giving.

NEWINGTON MEDAL (AUSTRALIA) 2014
Rod Thomas was a student at Newington from 1955 to 1960. Throughout his time at Newington,
his academic abilities were in evidence, culminating in the award of Dux of the College in
1960. His First Class Honours in Chemistry and Second Class Honours in both Physics and
Mathematics saw him gain a Commonwealth Scholarship and entry to study Medicine at the
University of Sydney.

As Dux of the College, Rod was awarded the Halse Rogers Prize and Schofield Scholarship whilst
his Leaving Certificate results earned him the Hardy Medal, awarded for the best pass in the
Leaving. Rod’s father Noel (ON 1930) and his son Peter (ON 1988) were also Dux and Hardy
Medallists, being the only instance of three generations of the one family so recognised in the
College’s 151 year history. Earlier this year, the Thomas family honoured the memory of Noel by
endowing the College and naming the Chemistry Superlab in his name.  Read the full citation for Rod Thomas.

Prof Graham Colditz (ON 1972)
NEWINGTON MEDAL (INTERNATIONAL) 2014
Graham Colditz was a student at Newington from 1967 to 1972. It is safe to say that whilst gifted
academically, he was also a leader and a student well respected by his peers and teachers alike.
The Newingtonian of 1972 records the Headmaster Tony Rae observe, “The school has been led
by two young men of distinction in Captain Tony Bosman and Vice-Captain Graham Colditz”. G
A Colditz also received the Old Boys’ Prize for Leadership, Scholarship and Sport and his Valete
notes he played 1st XI Cricket, 3rd XV Rugby, Athletics and was Cadet Senior Under Officer and
Vice Captain (now Deputy Senior Prefect).

Graham and his younger brother Ian (ON 1974), were also keen photographers, with Graham
achieving a first and a third in the 1972 NSW Secondary Schools Photographic Competition. As
a result of this interest, they have a rich photographic archive of life at Newington at this time. Graham graduated with a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Medicine and later Doctor of Medicine from the University of Queensland Medical School and his academic and medical research career since would rank him as one of Newington’s most distinguished Old Boys. He achieved his Masters and then Doctorate of Public Health at Harvard University and with his extensive research into the causes of cancer, particularly in women, he is now internationally recognised as a leader in cancer prevention. The Newington Medal recognises outstanding contributions, actions and achievements of Old Boys who have gone beyond the normal expectations. This is the highest honour Newington can bestow on an Old Boy for meritorious and commendable achievement. Ben Adams and Seb Rees have accepted offers to study at The University of Oxford and Matthew Han has accepted an offer from the University of Cambridge. Dominic Longhurst, known to Old Boys as the player of the Anzac Bugle at Newington’s Anzac Service, accepted a scholarship place at The Royal College of Music London. Offers by UK prestigious Royal Colleges of Music were also made to Cellist Valeriy Suraev and clarinettist Michael Choi. We hope to hear more about their illustrious careers in the future.

Newington Golf Day Thursday 5 March 2015

The annual Newington Golf Day will be held on Thursday 5 March, 2015 at Concord Golf Club.

The 2015 Golf Day will be held at Concord and very reasonably priced at $150 which includes green fees, lunch, buffet dinner, post round drinks and great prizes.

For Old Boys, the Alumni Year Challenge Trophy, won in 2014 by the Year of 1993, is at stake. At stake also is the historic Arthur HS Rofe Trophy won in 2014 by Chris Johnston (ON 1993) and David Royal (ON 1993).

Funds raised from this year’s Newington Golf Day go to the ONU  Tongan Bursary Fund and the ONU Depression Fund – set up to provide financial support for the treatment of depression for members of the ONU family.

Centenary ANZAC Service and Parade

Join us as at 8.45 am the Newington Community marks the Centenary of ANZAC in a very special morning of events, including:

  • Anzac Parade and commemoration by the Newington College Cadet Unit
  • Planting 111 crosses representing Newington’s First World War Fallen
  • Full School Anzac Service
  • Poppy Ceremony and re-dedication of the First World War Roll of Honour

Due to construction works, parking  is limited so guests should aim to arrive early. There will be no parking on the Old Boys Oval or the top carpark.

ONU Sports News – featuring Jack Hiscox (ON 2012)

Sydney Swans draftee Jack Hiscox (ON 2012)  – pictured above smashed the 3km time trial in a recent draft combine by a staggering 15 seconds. Jack has previous held two national titles in the 800m and whilst at Newington, he held College Athletics records for the 400m and 800m.   His personal bests are 1min 51.8sec for 800m and 47.2sec for 400m. 

Craig Fear (ON 1969) was recently presented with a Gold Blazer by the University of Sydney Chancellor for his volunteer work with the University of Sydney Football Club. As club statistician since 1998, he has recorded the results of all Rugby games, club stats, achievements of the club and players. As well as attending every grade fixture for the entire season for 17 years, he has coached and managed various grade teams when required. Congratulations Craig !!

Sailor George Stent (2014) recently competed in the 49erFX Australian nationals in Western Australia, placing 1st. This placing follows on from George’s recent racing successes in Melbourne and Sydney.

 

 

 

Neil Perry AM (ON 1975) to Open Founders Hospitality Centre

On 11 February, 2015, acclaimed Chef Neil Perry AM (ON 1975) will join the Dr David Mulford, Mr Tony McDonald (ON 1976) Chairman of College at the official opening of the Founders Hospitality Centre.  

The refurbished former boarders’ kitchen is now a commercial kitchen and will be used by students undertaking the new Hospitality and Food Technology courses being offered in 2015.

Neil Arthur Perry AM (ON 1975)  is an Australian chef, restaurateur, author and television presenter. He also is the co-ordinator for Qantas Flight Catering under his company Rockpool Consulting. Perry co-owns and is executive chef of restaurants in Australia. In Sydney his current stable consists of three restaurants located in the city’s CBD: his flagship fine-diner Rockpool, modern Chinese restaurant Spice Temple, and factory-job steakhouse Rockpool Bar & Grill. The original incarnation of Rockpool Bar & Grill meanwhile is located in Melbourne And he open “Rosetta” in Melbourne in late 2012. source Wikipedia.

Johnny Taylor (ON 1915) Cricket Bat donated to Newington

The family of Newington’s greatest sportsman, Johnny Taylor (ON 1915) have donated his Test Bat from the 1921 Ashes Series to the College. In this series, the Australian Team, captained by Warwick Armstrong defeated England 5-0. The bat was presented to the College by Johnny’s daughter-in-law Lyn Taylor, her son Kimble and his family. The College is very grateful for this significant donation of Australian Cricket history. The bat will be displayed in the Taylor Sports Centre.

Johnny Taylor was a student at Newington from 1906 to 1915 and was a member of the College’s 1st XI for five seasons, serving as Captain for two.

What an Honour on Australia Day for David Forbes (ON 1951) OAM

Congratulations to David Forbes (ON 1951) OAM on his 2015 Australia Day award for his contribution to sailing.

David Forbes was involved in top level sailing competition for over 20 years. Apart from winning an Olympic gold medal in 1972, he won a 5.5m world championship in 1970, a Sydney to Hobart race in 1974, and ten Australian championships, in the Star (seven times), 5.5m, Soling, and Etchell classes. He represented Australia at three Olympic Games, 1968 Mexico City, 1972 Munich, and 1976 Montreal, and was a member of two America’s Cup challenges. He was a part of the ‘Gretel II’ crew in the 1970 America’s Cup, and was relief helmsman in the 1977 America’s Cup.

It was after the 1970 America’s Cup challenge that Forbes and John Anderson (members of ‘Gretel II’) began planning for the 1972 Munich Games. They won the 1971 Australian Star class championship in ‘Scallywag’, then sailed the boat in the Olympic trials, winning all seven races. Competing in Europe, they found their opposition much stronger. 

In the Kiel Week regatta, they tended to do well in the early stages of the races, but would then start to fall back through the field. Overall they finished 28th in the regatta and they realised that they were just too slow. A month before the Games, they decided they needed to replace ‘Scallywag’ and it represented a huge gamble. While Forbes returned to Australia, Anderson went boat hunting and in Switzerland, found ‘Simba’.

As the Games loomed, they raced ‘Scallywag’ and ‘Simba’ in tuning trials, with Forbes steering ‘Simba’ and Anderson in charge of ‘Scallywag’. Other Australians, including Tom Anderson, made up the crew numbers.

Because of their poor form in ‘Scallywag’, and the makeshift nature of their switch to a new boat, Forbes and Anderson weren’t considered serious contenders to the Olympic title. With a bit of fine tuning they found speed on the eve of the Olympics and were suddenly confident. The strategy was simple, Forbes would steer, and Anderson would call tactics, and they would take no gambles.

It worked, in the seven races, they finished third, eighth, second, third, fourth, first, and third. Under the system, the worst performance was disregarded and thus their results were a model of consistency. By finishing third in the last race, they won emphatically with Sweden second and Germany third.

Forbes also competed in the Star class at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, finishing sixth, and in the Soling class at the 1976 Montreal Games, finishing eleventh. He was also a member of the Australian Admirals Cup team six times between 1973 and 1985.

A Message from the ONU President

Welcome to 2015, where the  ONU Executive and Councillors are looking forward to a busy ONU Calendar year. 

The talent in the Newington Old Boys’ community came to the fore early in 2015 with Australia Day Awards honours going to  David Forbes (ON 1951) OAM for Services to Sailing.  The College announced that acclaimed chef and Rockpool restauranteur, Neil Perry AM ( ON 1975) will open the new Founders Hospitality Centre. Neil  and other Old Boy leaders in the hospitality industry inspire us all with their passionate dedication to quality food and service.

Newington Golf Day
You are all invited to the Newington Golf Day on Thursday 5 March 2015, which promises to be an excellent day of golfing, networking and great fun. Centenary Anzac Service and Parade
Old Boys are invited to join the Newington community on Wednesday 29 April 2015 at 8.45am on Johnson Oval as the College marks the Centenary of Anzac in a very special morning of events.  Allow plenty of time as parking is limited on site due to construction works – see below.

Reunions and ONU Annual Dinner
Reunions for Year Groups are held every five years throughout 2015.  On 18 July, the ONU Annual Dinner, held in Centenary Hall and incorporating a few year group reunions will be a great get together for Old Boys. Mentor Programs for Younger Old Boys
Our mentor program for young old boys continues to be very worthwhile, with young old boys able to leverage off the knowledge of Old Boys with more experience to share. This is critical in times where young unemployed figures are alarming and we need to support our young school and university leavers get into the workforce.

Newington College Current Building Works
Works at the Secondary Campus over the holiday break included preventative maintenance operations, landscaping and upgraded external seating; upgrade of Level 1 of the Music Centre; upgrade of classrooms in War Memorial Wing; the creation of a hospitality kitchen within Founders; upgrade of PRS classrooms; upgrade of Mathematics staff room; the upgrade of the ONU Oval; and new furniture and ICT facilities throughout the College.

In exciting news, work will begin on three major projects early in Term 1. Firstly, a new Year 7 Centre will be built behind the Le Couteur building. As part of the works, we will be building a new Health Centre and upgrading the Cadet base. Secondly, a new Drama Centre will be built to replace the demountable next to the Old Chapel. Thirdly, a new pedestrian access will be built near the base of the Stanmore Rd overhead bridge to move pedestrians away from the driveway entry and exit including landscaped gardens. This last project will not start until after the Year 7 Centre is finished and the current Sevington buildings removed. Completion date for the first two projects is likely to be during Term 1 2016.

As the first two major projects are away from current teaching areas there will be little disruption to the workings of the College. We will lose use of the Chapel car park for 12 months. The temporary Health Centre for 2015 will be in the Le Couteur building (entrance at northern end).

ONU Centennial Trust – Applications Open

Applications are now open for the 2015 ONU Centennial Trust Award. The Trust recognises and financially rewards Old Newingtonians who have excelled in their chosen field and who contribute in a meaningful way to the community.  The Trust awards funds in the order of $10,000 – $20,000 (total amount) in any one year to up to four recipients so they may undertake study or research. Upon accepting his ONU Centennial Trust award along with a cheque for $10,000 at a College assembly in August, Edmond Cheng (ON 2013) expressed his gratitude to the teachers who encouraged and nurtured not just his exceptional academic ability but him as a whole person.  He said “I’ve learnt so much thanks to them, not just about their subjects, but how to think, how to write, how to argue, how to use Photoshop to create an image of an animal with a wolf’s head and a bird’s body, how to use a Blue’s scale to improvise on a saxophone, how to play the Italian card games,  Scopa and Briscola, how to run an effective zone defense, how to plan a camping trip, how to organize fundraising efforts, how to say hot chocolate in Nepali and I think, above all, how to appreciate the enormous range of opportunities we have access to here at Newington.”  He also acknowledged his teachers for inspiring him to explore overseas study options.

The ONU Centennial Trust selection panel unanimously agreed that Edmond was a very special candidate, talented in many areas and with an extraordinary list of academic accomplishments. The financial assistance provided by this year’s Trust endowment will allow Edmond to read Economics at St John’s College, Cambridge University.   Edmond’s achievements include the Dux award from 2010 to 2012 and the John F. Lincoln Prize for Dux of the Year 12 IB Diploma Programme. In 2010, whilst in Year 10, Edmond was awarded full marks and ranked first in the NSW HSC Mathematics exam. He won the UNSW Mathematics prize in 2011 and 2012 and numerous other prestigious competitions as well as making outstanding contributions to College activities.

Edmond recognises the extensive resource that is the Old Boys’ network, saying “the existence of the Centennial Trust award and other ONU support networks and initiatives, further shows just how much Newington has to offer. Newington has always supported my endeavours and I hope that someday, I will be able to more than return the favour.”
